- Rinse the black beans under cold water, removing any debris and stones.
- Soak the beans overnight in a large bowl with enough water to cover them by a few inches.
- Drain the soaked beans and transfer them to a large pot. Add fresh water until it covers the beans by about an inch.
Cooking
- Simmer on medium heat, bringing the pot to a gentle boil before reducing to low. Let them cook for about 1 hour, or until tender but not mushy.
- Season with salt, garlic powder, and cumin during the last 15 minutes of cooking.
- Serve warm in bowls, garnished with chopped cilantro and a squeeze of lime.
